A little over two years ago, two folks named Kenny and Julia showed up at our coffee bar. Kenny is from Rwanda and they were both looking to establish a sustainable coffee exporting business focused on Rwandan coffee. They were on a trip across the US to interview various roasting companies for market research, and swung by to talk to us. In their words, "sustainable” means both paying everyone well (farmers, washing station employees, exporters) and supporting businesses that have invested long-term in the community. Kenny expressed that he had seen a lot of coffee businesses in Rwanda that were either not economically viable or were geared towards the buyers and that had no roots in the community. So, they founded Higa Coffee, named after a word that means "to state something you would like to see happen and work to it." It is a fitting name for the company. Julia has since focused on becoming a Q-grader (an individual who is credentialed to grade and score coffees) and both of them now cup coffees from different local producers and partners on a regular basis. Their goal is to build relationships that help to build more equitable coffee supply chains.

When searching for coffees, they find area partners who:
  • pay their staff well
  • pay farmers well (around 20% higher than market for cherries)
  • have world-class quality control standards
  • have amazing coffee
This offering is from the Shyira Washing Station, which was built in 2017.  It's located at the foothills of the famous Virunga National Park and is the highest elevation washing station in Rwanda. The combination of temperate weather, high altitude, and volcanic soil give the station a microclimate that is perfect for growing specialty coffee. There are 1,869 small farm producers that contribute their coffee cherries - which is a lot of farmers considering the station is so new.
This particular offering is comprised of coffees from five top-producing members.  The intention is to both highlight the quality of these producers' coffees as well as showcase the best that this washing station has to offer. Higa pays extra to help create incentives to continually produce exceptional coffees while building long-term relationships. The result of these extra efforts is a cup with sweet, tart flavors of plum, tangerine, and Meyer lemon that is supported by a round and juicy body.  It is clear that there is a lot of love and intention that went into this coffee. The efforts of Higa Coffee and Shyira Washing Station show that the desire to both make a quality product and leave a positive impact on peoples' lives can go hand in hand. We're excited to offer you such an excellent coffee to enjoy now and during the warmer days ahead!
