A few years ago, our relationship with the small Rwandan coffee exporter, Higa Coffee, began. With their help, we have been able to source some unique and beautiful coffees from Rwanda. A few years ago we purchased coffee from this small, relatively new washing station, which happened to be the highest elevation washing station in Rwanda located in the Nyabihu district in northern province. This is beneficial because the trees that the coffee comes from must also be high grown, a trait that often has an improvement on the quality of a coffee.  Here are some notes from Higa about why this coffee from Shyira is special.

“Shyira is located at the foothills of the famous Virunga National Park. The national park is a chain of volcanoes and the habitat for mountain gorillas. Shyira is the highest altitude washing station in Rwanda at 1850m (6070 ft) above sea level. The temperate weather, high altitude, and volcanic soil give the station a microclimate perfect for growing specialty coffee. The coffee from this station has a distinctive taste profile from other locations in Rwanda. Shyira is unique in that it services 1869 small-holder farmers throughout the harvest. For a small station, this is a lot! Farmers bring their best cherry throughout the season, sometimes bringing only one pound. Higa purchased two lots, each from a group of 5 farmers. Higa is working with farmers to create incentives for them to continually produce exceptional specialty coffee and build long-term relationships with farming communities. We believe this coffee could win the national Cup of Excellence!”

This coffee is crisp, tart and lively with flavors of red grapefruit, hibiscus, and honeycrisp apple.  This is a phenomenal offering that we are excited to share with you, and a perfect compliment to the crisp and refreshing spring season just around the corner.

The names of the five farmers in the group that produced this beautiful coffee are as follows.

  • Sebikari Celestin
  • Habimara Laurent
  • Mukakabano Annancieta
  • Ntaganda Fredrick
  • Mbabarengirente Esperance
