Huehuetenango is a well-known coffee growing region. The area of Huehuetenango in which the Asociación Barillense de Agricultores (ASOBAGRI) is located is a very remote and isolated area due to its extraordinarily rugged terrain. This has served to preserve indigenous cultures. It has also served to promote a progressive cooperative. ASOBAGRI has more than 1400 members throughout 80 different communities. Many of them cultivate and harvest their own coffee from their small farms and also own their own micromills. Because of its isolation, the cooperative offers a lot of training and resources to its members in order to be more self sufficient -- such as educating farmers on how to turn coffee pulp into fertilizer. This helps cut down on costs involved with purchasing and transporting outside fertilizers as well as promoting healthier and higher yielding crops. ASOBAGRI also has centralized warehouses to store dried parchment and a cupping lab where producers can get immediate feedback on their coffees. That sensory information can then be used to plan future improvements to their practices. These details are the reason why the ASOBAGRI cooperative creates such high quality coffee.
In the cup, look for orange, cocoa, and peanut brittle flavors in this clean and full-bodied decaf.
This coffee Fair Trade Certified and Certified Organic.
All coffees are available in whole bean only.
