This is a very exciting time of the year for us. It is around this time when some of our favorite East African offerings start arriving. Among them are coffees from the small, land-locked country of Burundi. The history of coffee in Burundi is a challenging one, rooted in colonialism but transformed by hard work and relationship building. It is one that our import partners work hard to navigate and we greatly appreciate their efforts in doing so. Their work allows us to taste a lot of the gems that Burundi has to offer and Burundi Gacokwe is no exception.

Located near the town of Rango, the Gacokwe Washing Station is in the Kayanza Province. Around 2,000 local farmers with small lots of land provide coffee cherries to one of six coffee collection points associated with this washing station. The coffee is then sorted, processed, and milled. Because of this way of handling the coffee, flavor profiles are created which give a taste of place unique to that washing station.  This year’s crop of coffee from around the Gacokwe Washing Station has lush notes of apricot, dried fig, and mandarin orange.  It showcases both a crisp, vibrant acidity and a round, wine-like body.

All coffees are available in whole bean only.
